Soundcore Q30
A major improvement over the Soundcore Life 2 from late-2018, these over-ears appear better, feel stronger and are generally more polished. They're still largely plastic but the hinges are a bit more secure and the soft leather ear cups are larger. You can swap the 3.5mm cord with a high quality USB-C cable to connect them to portable Hi-Res devices and stationary players. They also come with two mics built in that worked well during our tests with FaceTime, Skype and Microsoft Teams calls.
The Soundcore app comes with a wide range of EQ presets, which can be customized and saved to allow you to listen to podcasts and music in the way you prefer. The Soundcore app is easy to use and makes these headphones stand out.
The Q30's 40mm speakers effectively block out the majority of ambient noise when ANC is enabled. This makes for an extremely enjoyable listening experience. The Q30's sound quality is natural, however it lags a little on the treble. Some may not be a fan of the bass response (we have had better results using the Bass Booster equalizer). You can fix this easily with the Soundcore App, which has an eight-band Equalizer.
The left ear cup has the power button and a pairing button and Bt Headphones wireless USB-C charging port. The right earcup has buttons for volume up/down, play/pause and volume up/down. By double-clicking these controls, you can skip tracks or repeat the previous one. They also support an option to speak to them which allows you to ask to switch the mode or set an alarm. You can also cover the right earcup with your fingers to enable ambient modes to allow you to hear the world around you without taking off the headphones.
The Q30 headphones offer a long battery life. In our tests with ANC turned on the Q30 lasted nearly an hour longer than the other headphones. This lets you enjoy the long flight, or a full day at work. They can be quickly recharged by using the USB-C cable that comes with them and you'll be able to see a warning when they're approaching empty.

Utilizing the app, you are able to change various settings, including the LED brightness and EQ presets, including a "music profile' that sounds more neutral and brighter than the other ones and their battery life. It also lets you to choose the ANC mode and the level as well as setting an 'acoustic' environment which adjusts the sensitivity of your music to simulate what it would sound like when used in a room with different soundproofing.
The Focal Bathys come with an incredibly bass-rich profile that gives extra warmth and punch to your favorite tracks. Sony has a stellar reputation for its headphones, and the WH-1000XM5 is no exception. This means that the XM5s are expensive in cost, but if you can afford it, there are few better over the ear wireless bluetooth headphone headphones out there.
The XM5s come with a variety of features that make life easier for the listener, and also automate tasks they would otherwise be required to do manually. Sony's DSEE Extreme engine (which upscales compressed music to close to high-res) is included, as is support for Bluetooth's LDAC technology. That allows for streaming of high-quality audio at bitrates that are higher than standard Bluetooth. There's a built-in mic for making hands-free phone calls.
The XM5 headphones aren't different than the previous generation headphones from WH in regards to noise cancellation. They're among the best-performing cans to block out the constant drones heard in train and underground carriages. The XM5s also excel at isolating the listener from the noises of busy airports and streets.
The sound quality is excellent. The XM5s don't have as many details in the low-frequency range as the XM4, but they do possess more clarity and openness. The bass on Rage Against The Machine's Bullet in the Head shows the Sonys strength and clarity but without affecting the rest of the music. In the same way, Massive Attack's grooving Angel showcases the XM5's ability to create accurate and precise bass notes.
The battery life is fantastic with up to 30 hours listening time when ANC is on and 40 hours if off. This is enough to last a weekend getaway or several days of heavy use.
The XM5s aren't water resistant or dust resistant. Sony actually recommends not sweating into them or wearing them in the rain. This may not be a problem for the majority of people however for those who spend long hours in the gym or live in a humid area it could be a big issue.
Apple AirPods Max
Apple AirPods Max is a pair of wireless wirless headphones over-ear that feature Bluetooth technology and noise cancellation. They feature 40mm Apple-designed dynamic drivers with neutral audio profiles that concentrates on the highs and mids while not going too loud on either ends of the spectrum. This makes them ideal for both movies and music. They also have higher fidelity than most competing pairs of headphones.
The headphones are lightweight and feel comfortable on the head. The ear cups are constructed out of memory foam that is covered in weaved fabric. They sit comfortably on the ears without pressing on the sides of the face. The ear cups also tilt and rotate to accommodate different head shapes. The hinges that are spring loaded have a firm but not overly powerful clamping force, which ensures that the earcups remain in place during listening sessions.
Switch on noise cancellation by pressing a small button at the top of the right earcup. You can also utilize an earphone-style jog dial with a push button similar to the digital crown on the Apple Watch. You can twist it for volume control and press it one three, twice, or even three times to playback the controls. Pressing and holding the button invokes Siri. The buttons are well-placed and easy to use, but I was disappointed that there wasn't an option to switch off the headphones when they're not in use. The headphones are put into standby mode when removed from your ears, or if they are placed in their case. They return to life when you place them over your head.
Spatial audio is a cool feature. It makes use of accelerometers, gyroscopes and iPhones and iPads to determine where you are moving. Then, it adjusts the sounds to make them appear to come from the location you are in. This creates a theater-like experience with movies and videos recorded in Dolby Atmos, 5.1 or 7.1. The only catch is that spatial audio requires an iOS device for use and you won't be able to enjoy it on other devices.
The AirPods Max are a decent pair of headphones, but I'd feel slightly smug about going into an Apple Store and spending $549 on them if I knew they'd be beaten in a year by the new model. AirPods Pro are more expensive, but they have superior battery life and more advanced features.
